Green Sense: Win/Win for Producers and Consumers

Here's a great NYT blog by Libby Rosenthal about the "Business of Green"

My thoughts: Wouldn't it be a win/win for consumers and producers if everyone recycled old electronic equipment by either donating to those in need or returning to the manufacturer for a rebate? This is possible, contact me for more details.

My business of green column today is about the growing options here in Europe for disposing of unwanted electronic equipment in an eco-friendly manner. The European Union as well as a number of electronics companies like Dell and Nokia are pioneering new thinking in the field.

"Such items should not be taken to landfill because they contain polluting metals and toxins that, in Europe at least, qualify them as “hazardous material.” More to the point, much of the stuff can be recycled if the products are “taken back” and dismantled properly.

"The EU now wants all electronics stores to take back old equipment for free for recycling. And consumer pressure can clearly make both manufacturers and stores more responsive. Before buying a brand, I will now ask about the company’s “take back” policies, and will not buy unless there is a good answer. (As I sit here writing on my new laptop, purchased in New York, I am relieved to report that Apple computers now has a take back policy for the U.S. - although Greenpeace notes that it does not apply in many other countries.) You can get some guidance about corporate policies by looking at Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics, although very recent improvements (like that at Apple) are not reflected
in the ranking yet.

"What about you? How do you get rid of old computers/televisions/mobile phones where you live? What kinds of systems are in place? Are stores responsive? Here in Italy, even though they will take back products as required, the service is not advertised, I suppose because it’s just a hassle for them."
